Your status as a student is separate from your status as a worker.
In the latest collective agreement, we bargained to ensure that a member’s academic record (e.g. coursework or research) cannot be harmed by their labour relationship. That is to say, any attempt to harm a member’s academic record as a result of their TA work (or vice versa) is subject to our grievance procedure.
This policy is new to unions like ours, and we are one of the first unions of TAs or Graduate Students that has language of this sort in our collective agreement. We are working actively with UBC’s administration to determine the most effective ways to implement this policy.
