Some TAs are assigned a full TAship for two terms in the Winter session: this amounts to 192 hours of work per term, or 384 hours total.  Other TAs are assigned a single-term TAship (192 hours), or even half-TAships of 96 hours per term.

No matter which type of TAship you have, you cannot be required to work more than 24 hours in a single week, or over a span of more than 8 hours in any one day, without your consent.

Anything related to your TA position is counted as work, and this can involve a variety of tasks, including:

  • Teaching classes, tutorials, labs, etc.
  • Marking assignments or exams
  • Invigilating exams
  • Answering e-mails from students
  • Holding office  hours
  • Tutoring
  • Vacation hours or sick leave

These smaller jobs can add up, so you are strongly encouraged to keep a record of your hours, detailing what kind of work you are doing, and how much time you spent on each task.  This will help ensure that you don’t exceed the working hours that you are paid for.  If it seems likely that you will exceed your maximum allocated hours (for a given day, week, or term), please consult with your TA supervisor or department as soon as possible.  If you are unable to resolve this issue, please contact us.
