Emergency Meeting

Dear Teaching Assistants — We have scheduled an emergency meeting on January 31st (Tuesday) @ 5 PM in the GSS Ballroom. There are issues sensitive enough that we want our membership to hear them directly and not through other means. We will have information that we may distribute publicly after the meeting, but these matters must be discussed with teaching assistants first. We highly recommend that you attend and ensure that representatives from your department be sent. -David, Communications Chair

Bargaining Update

This is the first in a new series of posts on bargaining. The aim is to get brief updates out to you via a faster medium than our regular newsletters.

We had our first bargaining session of 2012 last Monday, January 9. We’ve got a lot of non-monetary proposals on the table which we have yet to finalize, but we made some progress this time. Of particular note, we signed off on articles granting two new leaves to teaching assistants at UBC: leave for comprehensive exams and thesis/dissertation defences, and leave to present at an academic conference.

We’ll be back at the table on Monday, January 23rd, and then we’ve got another five bargaining dates in January and February, so expect more updates in this space.

-Roger, Bargaining Committee Chair

Wiki Goes Online

A wiki with key information for people wanting to learn more about this Union is now online.

Check out our wiki to learn more about the history of the local, achievements gained from past rounds of collective bargaining, and grievance stories from members where we had to step in and advocate on behalf of that member.

We hope you enjoy taking a look at it and keep posted for future updates!

CUPE 2278 Extends Its Condolences to the Loved Ones and Co-Workers of Ximena Osegueda Magaña

All UBC Teaching Assistants were shocked to learn of the recent death of Ximena Osegueda Magaña, who was a PhD student at UBC. Tragically, Ximena and her boyfriend Alejandro Honorio Santamaria were found murdered near Bahías de Huatulco in Mexico.

On behalf of the Union, the exec would like to express our sadness and condolences to Ximena’s family, friends, and fellow workers in this difficult time. Ximena was enthusiastic and full of life and will be deeply missed.

While the service will not be held in Canada, friends have created a Facebook page in Ms. Osegueda’s memory.

-David and everyone on the 2278 Exec
